Books Junior Specialist (W/M) 

To research and catalogue property as it comes in to the department, both for sale and valuation purposes. To work with the specialists and sale coordinator on all sale related activity along with daily client interaction and business needs. To assist with business-generation activities and in developing and maintaining client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Catalogues and assists in the preparation of book & manuscript sales
  • Researches property including authenticity, bibliographical references and provenance
  • Produces catalogue notes, essays and condition reports, with support from senior colleagues
  • Assists with all aspects of catalogue production
  • Assists with marketing and photography of lots
  • Ensures accuracy of all information relating to sales - photography, provenance, condition reports
  • Helps to prepare auction set up and view
  • Develops own specialist knowledge in order to build credibility in a specialist area
  • Acts as central point of contact for Client Services for estimate requests, review of incoming photographs and email enquiries
  • Where appropriate, accompanies and supports senior specialists on business getting trips and valuations
  • Provides support and research on pricing and valuations
  • Supports senior colleagues in business generation activities
  • Works directly with clients under the supervision of senior colleagues
  • Develops and manages a network of clients and contacts
  • Builds an understanding of the current market and key players
  • Participates actively in the art community to raise Christie’s profile
  • Ensures client information databases are up to date, working with sale coordinator and Business Intelligence
  • Participates in activities that support the smooth running of sales in all channels (auction, private sales & online)

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Humanities-related subject or equivalent
  • Demonstrable interest and involvement in specialism or related field
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrable interest in, the wider art market
  • Awareness of the parameters of appraising property for sale
  • Excellent communication (both verbal & written) and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional client service skills
  • Strong organisational skills with an ability to work to tight deadlines & prioritise
  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Research skills including analysis and interpretation of data
  • Attention to detail, accuracy
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with absolute discretion
  • Fluency in English essential
  • Ability to work collaboratively, team player
  • Conscientious and detail driven
